Four pedestrians, all family members, were struck by a car Wednesday night in Irvine and one was fatally injured. The car’s driver was later arrested on suspicion of being under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
The collision was reported just before 8 p.m. near the intersection of Ridgeline and Turtle Rock drives, according to Orange County Fire Authority Capt. Tony Bommarito.
All four patients — a 49-year-old man, a 45-year-old woman, a 16-year-old boy and a 15-year-old girl — suffered traumatic injuries and were taken to hospitals, he said. The man was taken by helicopter to UC Irvine Medical Center in Orange, Bommarito said.
Police later said the woman died just after 9 p.m. The conditions of the remaining three patients were listed as serious, Irvine police said in a news release.
The identities of the victims weren’t immediately released.
The driver of the car remained at the scene and was evaluated but was not believed to be seriously injured, Bommarito said. Police identified him as Kamal Attoh, 37, of Irvine, and said he was taken into custody.
The Irvine Police Department is handling the investigation.
Ridgeline Drive was temporarily closed to traffic between Hillsborough and Turtle Rock Drive.
